Every Woman 2024 Letter
Jun. 22nd, 2024 12:23 amThanks for checking out my letter! I've included some general notes about my preferences up front, some detailed prompts and thoughts about each of my requested characters, and then a big list of "Things I Generally Like in Fic" at the very end.
The big picture: Overall, I am open to fic of any rating, and including any AO3 Archive Warning if appropriate to the story. When prompting for romantic pairings or shippy content I'm happy to receive (but in no way require) sexual content. I permit and welcome treats of any kind.
Elly Conway | Rachel Kylle
Elly Conway, perma-tired and people-avoidant 43 year old cat lady wearing mom jeans and a cardigan while having writer's block about Henry Cavill characters, are you, in fact, me?
I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this film, absurd as it is. Feel free to lean into the absurdity and the meta-ness of it, but I’m also equally happy to play the trope train of it straight, because I loved every cliched beat. Anything you want to create related to Elly | Rachel would be very welcome.
DNW:
*Non-canonical Major Character Death (Temporary character death is always OK and one of my likes.)
*Attributing canon relationships with men to compulsory heterosexuality or otherwise explicitly contradicting the possibility of the requested character being bisexual (canon divergence where the canon relationships don’t exist in the first place is OK, including only f/f relationships is OK)
Preferred Ships: I definitely enjoy the Elly/Aidan romcom thing (he is so incredibly pathetic (affectionate) for her, Sam Rockwell has sad wet dog vibes down pat), but I am extremely interested in exploring her implied relationships/flirtations/“things” with Saba and or LaGrange as well. Gen with literally anybody else in the cast, including “Mom and Dad” are very welcome, too.
Pre-canon, pre-Elly ideas:
*The early days of her partnership with Aidan and/or Keira, or mission fic. What was Rachel like then? How did they get on?
*What exactly happened in Mogadishu between her and Aidan, and was it romantic from the get-go, or was it fuckbuddies to lovers, or something else entirely?
*Saba al-Badr definitely implied that they had a thing. And if the meeting with LaGrange was anything like the version in the book, Rachel is bisexual as hell. What were either of those interactions like?
During the “5 years”:
*Was the Division totally blindsided by the popularity of the books or what? It seems like that kind of publicity would have been much more of a problem for them than if she’d lived at home with mom and dad and self-published.
*Love the idea of Elly having vague, angsty feelings of discontent about something being missing in her life that she can’t quite put her finger on at any point during those 5 years. There’s a lot of ground to dig in with Elly fighting the fake memories (and self-doubt) when she has the inexplicable feeling that she should be out having the adventures she’s writing about.
*Vogler drafted Elly’s diaries to get her writing - did she outline the character of Argylle, too? Who defined him as, well, him, and did Elly go back and forth about wanting to write a female protagonist in her novels, but get talked out of it? (Feel free to ignore that last “1 year later” scene at the very end, same for the mid-credit scene, if you go this route.)
*Her interactions with fans seem so incredibly exhausting for her! Is that something the Division is explicitly manipulating alongside her anxiety and panic attacks (seems likely) or is there more to it?
Canon and post-canon:
*Any kind of missing scene that digs into how Elly was feeling at any point in the film that we didn’t actually see. I’m particularly curious about the time she would have spent getting ready for the mission to go to Saba’s palace at Alfie’s place. Did the whole cosplay aspect of it freak her out or kinda thrill her a bit? Maybe she had a pep talk with Argylle in a mirror? Maybe Aidan or Alfie had to talk her through more nerves?
*How much does she ultimately decide to remain Elly Conway? Just to get the final book published? Just as a pen name, or as more than that? How does she wrestle with being both Elly and Rachel?
*Anything about how her relationship with Aidan has changed and that they’re going to be different people now given everything that happened, and negotiating that reality, for good and ill.
*What’s next for her? Back to the spy game? Another series of books? Taking time away from it all for a bit? Becoming someone else entirely? (Again, feel free to ignore the thing that happens at the “1 year later” scene if you like, or play with it in a way that doesn’t have to be consistent with the mid-credit scene.)
Art (everything above is also fair game as a prompt, but also):
Elly cuddling Alfie the Cat!
Anything playing with identity issues, such as Elly looking in a mirror and seeing Rachel instead of herself or Argylle, or something blurring the lines between the fantasy of the books and the reality. (My pet headcanon is that half of the movie is this already beyond even the appearances by Argylle himself - the colorful gunfight dance and the oil slick ice skating murder party in particular seem like we’re getting a highly fictionalized view of what went down, to say the least. The infrared views were showing standard gunfight action, not a dance party!)
Gaby Teller
Gaby Teller
Abandoned by her father, picked up by a potentially very dangerous spymaster, and dealing with two barely-cooperating “top spies” with apparently more ego than sense, Gaby manages a lot over the course of the film, and keeps her eyes on the target. Like a lot of “the girl” characters in spy films she exists in the narrative mostly for the guys’ stories, but I like anything that explores what she wants, thinks, or feels in her situation.
Preferred Ships: The OT3 (Gaby/Illya/Napoleon) is my main ship for this fandom, but I love her individually with either of them, and am also intrigued by Gaby/Waverly. Gaby/Victoria and Gaby/Alexander (or Gaby/Victoria/Alexander) for darker AUs has potential as well. Gen with any of them are also very much of interest.
Prompts
Pre-canon:
Anything about Gaby’s youth in Berlin. How much did she know about her father, off in the US working for the government while she lived through the post-war privation, her mother died, and she ended up with a foster family? What was her childhood like, and how did it shape her attitudes so that when Waverly came calling she said “yes”?
How did Waverly recruit her? Anything about that interaction and how it went down would be fantastic.
Canon divergence where Uncle Rudi found her and took her in as a child, even as he was still an unhinged henchman torturer for fascist baddies. Does she end up coming to the events of the film in a very different way? Does she work for the Vinciguerras, too? Victoria seems to find her somewhat amusing, and I could imagine a very terrifying mentorship situation happening there.
Film events:
Any missing scene or canon divergence of events you might choose to concoct. Gaby makes a bit of an attempt to get close to Alexander Vinciguerra at the party - what might that have looked like if she had more opportunity before Illya trampled on it?
A character study/deep dive regarding her apparent feelings for Illya. How much of it is performance, how much of it is earnest, and how much of it is deeply frustrating to her? How complicated is her affection for a staunchly Soviet son of Mother Russia, given her life in Berlin?
Post-canon:
As an UNCLE agent Gaby will be traveling outside of Germany for likely only the second meaningful time in her life post-film if they head to Istanbul as implied; she's also significantly younger and less experienced than Illya and Napoleon per their end-of-film dossiers. Despite getting one over on the CIA's best and the KGB's finest in the film, perhaps she has uncertainty about choosing the spy's life (maybe Illya and/or Napoleon even grimly encourage her to get out while she can) and she has to actively decide to stay with UNCLE (and her partners) when given the opportunity to do something different.
Alternately, she leaves the spy game after she’s fulfilled her obligations (whatever they might be) to Waverly, and does something else entirely. I could see her skills finding use in a number of other contexts. Does she get dragged back into espionage at some point?
Eventually Gaby and Napoleon have a conversation about her giving him up to the Vinciguerras, which led to his torture. (I don’t request this to see Gaby self-flagellate over her choices, and I don’t think there’s much evidence that Solo seriously holds it against her, but I do like the idea that there is tension there that would need to be worked out at some point if they’re going to continue working together.) Maybe they talk, maybe they fight, maybe they get drunk together, maybe they fuck about it, your call.
On a mission her partner(s) is/are somehow incapacitated and/or presumed dead and she has to finish the job all on her own, or she’s sent on a solo mission without backup, and things get hard.
Waverly’s mentorship as a potentially very double-edged sword. I am a bit weak for the idea that over time he wants her to be his successor, but that’s a hell of a lot of responsibility.
Years down the line, Gaby post-retirement, whatever that might look like. How might she view the way politics and global events have changed the world up to the modern era? What role might she have played in it? The idea of looking back on a life well-lived (?) is always interesting.
Art (everything above is also fair game as a prompt, but also):
Gaby developing her own sense of style (versus being dressed by Illya, however stylish his choices) is really interesting to me. If you want to play with mid-60s fashion for her, go nuts!
Brienne of Tarth
Book Brienne has been my fandom fave for literal decades at this point, and Gwendoline Christie’s Brienne in Game of Thrones is a different character from the book but embodied her so well. I have a huge number of issues with the way that the show panned out overall but very few specific to her character arc. She is the perfect mirror held up to Westerosi knighthood and she shows every way it is lacking by being a truer knight than any of the rest.
Preferred Ships: Brienne/Jaime, Brienne/Margaery, Brienne/Sansa, Brienne & Pod
Prompts:
A historical look back on Ser Brienne of Tarth, Lord Captain of the Kingsguard (potentially written in the style of Fire & Blood with conflicting viewpoints!) would be very cool.
I am always happy to devour fic that has Brienne/Jaime work out differently. Messy and complicated and even ugly, sure, but basically everything that happened after he knighted her (a top-3 moment of my fandom life was seeing that on screen) was something of a disaster! Let her stop him from going, let him survive somehow, even successfully fleeing with Cersei. Give them the opportunity to find one another again and work out better!
Brienne at Highgarden, somehow, among the Tyrells. I always found Margaery’s (and Olenna’s) appreciation of Brienne as being very much curiosity on their part about how she could benefit them, but I could also see something more meaningful and mutual developing. The Tyrells very much look out for themselves but appreciate those who serve them, and I could see an unconventional but true knight becoming something special in the heart of chivalrous Westeros. I like the idea of Margaery/Brienne, with any tone from sweet to political to kinky, or even to Brienne marrying Loras to give him cover while she and Margaery run the show.
Brienne’s fierce protection of Sansa becoming something more intimate. Loyalty, baby! Alternately, an AU where she remains at Sansa’s side in the North as her Queensguard and doesn’t return to Westeros, and how she would fare in that world.
I always love Brienne mentoring Pod, and Pod in turn helping Brienne. Their relationship is one of my top platonic relationships in the show, and something from Pod’s POV would be really welcome!
Lately I’ve been really curious about Brienne in a time loop. I know time loops/time travel/fix-it plots are popular in Game of Thrones fandom, but Brienne’s utterly fierce devotion to rightness would be so interesting to explore in that context. I’d leave it up to you the point of the loop or time travel (and am open to her traveling even back to pre-canon history rather than within the frame of canon).
General Likes and Preferences
Setting tropes and AU premises I love
- canon divergence/"what if" AUs - I love butterfly effect, "change one thing" AUs especially!
- soulmates and soul bonds - and soulmate subversion, and soulmates played dark or strange - feel free to play it straight but I also love characters choosing someone(s) other than a soulmate, or the notion of soulmates being as much trouble as they are a joy. The worldbuilding would be wild in a world where soulmates are A Thing - I love exploring the effects of that, and the ambiguous bits of such an AU.
- battle couples/trios - ties neatly into competency kink and loyalty kink sexual likes, but non-sexual love and romance among folks who fight together is A+ also
- magical aus (give non-magical characters/canons magic - telepathy, mind magic, arcane magic, spellcasting. Though many of the canons I tend to like have magic of some kind, feel free to go on a worldbuilding dive into what any of my non-magical canon requests might look like if magic was real.)
- alternate magical system AUs (keep the canon magic, but make it different somehow)
- fairy tale AUs
- daemon AUs (or any other "sentient animal companion" magic settings - Valdemar's Companions, Chronicles of the Cheysuli's lir, the "Animalled" of Beukes' Zoo City, witch familiars, etc)
- time loops/Groundhog Day premise (via magic or weird science or no explanation whatsoever)
- undercover antics and/or identity porn - undercover fake married, partners or lovers undercover as enemies, or characters having overlapping complex arrangements of fake identities are all good
- future fic and "next gen" fic (about children of canonical characters as older teens or adults)
- ghosts, communicating with the dead (via magic or weird science)
- enemies to lovers
- werewolves and other were-creatures/animal shapeshifters - tying into magical AUs, I like "everyone's a werewolf" or some kind of magical critter AUs, or just one particular character being "other". Mixing and matching - werewolf and vampire, or werewolf and magical creature hunter, for example, is also a lot of fun.
- sharing a bed (sexual, romantic, or platonic) - enforced intimacy!
- huddling for warmth - more enforced intimacy!
- trapped in a cabin in a blizzard - are you seeing the trend about enforced intimacy?!
- Hurt/Comfort - see the whole section on this trope below
Hurt/Comfort & Whump favorites (note that the "comfort" can be sexual, romantic, or platonic)
The thing I really like the most about h/c and whump is the intimacy of it all. The caring for another person in h/c, and/or the traumatic headspace/emotional rollercoaster of pain and angst the whumped character goes through are absolutely my personal catnip.
Hurt and Whump Preferences:
- torture - I'm generally interested in the emotions and sensory elements more than the gore here. Exhaustion, pain, lingering emotional/mental trauma and mild-to-moderate long-term physical effects are my preferences. I'm less interested in super-severe injury, amputation, or mindbreak-levels of torture.
- sleep deprivation/exhaustion
- noble self-sacrifice - risking harm or death (by performing a noble last stand, or being a distraction, or playing the honeypot, or offering yourself up for torture/assault) to spare others punishment or to allow them to escape
- drugging
- hallucinations
- forced to watch others being hurt
Comfort Preferences:
- hair touching/running fingers through hair
- helping others with personal care - hair washing, shaving, injury tending
- small acts of intimacy/care - preparing food, standing guard while the hurt one sleeps, sharpening the hurt one's edged weapons or cleaning their guns
- sex (with some consideration for the seriousness of the hurt, but I do not expect medical accuracy)
Sex tropes I love
- dubcon - specifically in situations when both/all parties are consenting under duress due to outside forces, such as "sex pollen", "bad guys made them do it", or character(s) consenting to spare another character from having to do so. I like all kinds of outcomes from this plot - the somewhat positive outcomes of admitting hidden feelings or strengthening a relationship after such a difficult experience; a more tragic or negative outcome such as the end of a relationship/partnership, or tragedy; or something ambiguously between the two - I'm happy with any direction unless otherwise requested in my DNWs for a particular fandom/character/ship.
- bondage - particularly of stoic or restrained characters getting tied up and absolutely wrecked
- first time sex - both first time sex ever or first time performing a particular sex act for a character if there's a reasonable characterization of said character as inexperienced, and also first time sex with a particular partner
- sex magic
- pegging (both f/m and f/f)
- praise kink - particularly of stoic and/or damaged characters unused to and undone by praise
- casual physical intimacy between partners - falling asleep on partner's shoulder, cuddling, spooning, etc., especially of characters not used to casual physical intimacy becoming comfortable with it - this could include both characters who have lots of casual sex but not much casual cuddling, or characters who are touch starved or anything in between
- begging during sex ("please!")
- sex as an emotional outlet in the wake of tragedy or grief, such as friends grieving the loss of a mutual friend or loved one or getting over a shared bad experience
- Dominance/submission (though I prefer it NOT be formalized BDSM, such as negotiating safewords and "Master/sir" address, etc. Also, if it's f/m I generally prefer the female character be dominant unless otherwise requested. For my various gender composition OT3+ ships I either don't care or will specify in the prompts.)
- sex between platonic friends
- competence kink
- threesomes
- loyalty kink
- oral sex and fingering/handjobs, both as a precursor to vaginal or anal sex, and as its own thing
